What is the point of the Chinese central bank wanting to appreciate the Yuan? Isn’t it better for them if it depreciates? Additionally, in trying to appreciate the currency they are spending their reserves.

Few of us really know a good answer to this question, except that it is a matter of pride and that there is an external pressure to avoid catastrophic depreciation.
